The Best Baked ‘Cheese’ Waffles (Gluten free, Vegan)

It never really occurred to me to make savoury waffles until I had them in Prague and experienced how good they are first hand! These waffles have a cheesy flavour due to the nutritional yeast in them and act as a perfect base for an array of different savoury toppings making this a really versatile recipe!

For this recipe you will need a silicone waffle mould which are relatively inexpensive if you buy them online.Β I actually based this recipe on my baked blueberry wafflesΒ so you may notice the basic batter recipe is the same. I just removed the sugar and blueberries and substituted them for nutritional yeast, paprika and herbs to give it a lovely savoury twist.

Try these topped with avocado, spinach and mushrooms or in place of toast and hash browns on a fry up! Mine usually cook in 18 minutes but allow up to 20 as ovens do vary.

Ingredients

  • 50g 1/4 cup + 1 tbsp gluten free plain flour
  • 60ml 3 tbsp + 2 tsp soya milk
  • 25ml 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp garlic salt
  • 1/4 tsp mixed herbs
  • pinch of black pepper
  • pinch of sea salt

Method

  1. Place all ingredients in a mixing bowl or jug and combine until a thick batter forms
  2. Spoon the mixture out evenly into your silicone waffle mould
  3. Bake in a preheated oven for 18 - 20 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius
